May 01, 2016 – Hummingbirds Have Arrived!

Day 122 – May 01, 2016 – Sunday

Weather
• I don’t know about the morning but the afternoon was beautiful with blue sky and plenty of puffy white clouds. And it was warmer with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. The sun was very bright and hot. It would have been even nicer if the humidity had been lower. There were a couple of light sprinkles in the evening and then as it got dark the thunder and lightning started and then we got some rain too.

• 0.25 inch of rain or maybe a little bit less

• a bit muggy

Ground Conditions
• wet

Gardening and Yard Work
• cleaned up the pile of sticks in the butterfly garden
• dug out 2 or 3 honeysuckle on the hill, and a vine I think, and broke starts off more honeysuckle with the shovel
• planted a clump of xxx on the hill, that M. dug up in the front porch garden

Observations
• starting to get some afternoon shade on the hill where the cherry trees were and down to around the butterfly garden

Butterflies
• unidentified – several different kinds, one was medium sized with rapid erratic flight, one was larger and dark blue or black, and there were several others
• cabbage white

Birds
• black-capped chickadee
• cardinal – male
• smalls
• goldfinches
• robins
• unidentified – black, maybe european starlings but not sure
• grackle
• hummingbird(s) – female, at the feeder about 7:30 pm, 1st one I’ve seen this year, several sightings
• white-breasted nuthatch
• geese – 2 flew over

Other Animals
• squirrel
• rabbits
